Winter Activities for Kids in Shakopee
Whether you want to embrace the cold or play inside, Shakopee has plenty of kid-friendly winter activities the whole family will enjoy. From outdoor options like extreme horse skijoring to indoor fun like bowling, here are our favorite things to do with kids this winter.
Outdoor activities
Watch the exciting sport of extreme horse skijoring at Canterbury Park on Saturday, February 24 and Sunday, February 25, 2024. Horse skijoring combines horse racing and skiing, with a rider on a horse pulling a skier through a challenging course of gates and jumps. The event also includes a freestyle show with tricks and flips, dachshund and corgi racing, dog sled rides, and kids’ activities. Admission is free for children 5 and under and discounted for children ages 6-12.
Also at Canterbury Park is the Snocross Nationals and Regionals, happening January 12 & 13 for the nationals and January 20 & 21 for the regionals. Kids will get to witness the snowmobiles soaring over jumps or zipping around corners at lightening speeds. This non-stop action is sure to get their hearts pumping!
Explore the grounds at The Landing to learn how Minnesotans lived in the 19th century, with historic buildings including an 1845 fur post, 1857 farm, 1889 farm, and village with shops, homes, and other structures. There’s also a hiking trail along the Minnesota River with great views.
Glide across the ice at Shakopee’s outdoor ice rinks, which are lit after sunset. The rinks at Green Meadows Park, Westminster Park, and Southbridge Community Park have staffed warming houses, and there’s also a rink at Lions Park without a warming house. Outdoor rinks are open through late February, weather permitting.
Zoom down the sledding hill at Lions Park if conditions allow. The park is also home to the Fun for All Playground, an inclusive playground with sensory activities for all ages.
Inside
Enjoy indoor skating at the Shakopee Ice Arena whatever the weather. Check the online schedule for information about open skating and youth open hockey sessions.
Splash around at the Shakopee Indoor Aquatic Center in the zero-depth-entry leisure pool. There’s also a play structure with a small water slide, a large water slide, and a four-lane lap pool available for open swimming. During Tot Time sessions for kids ages 0-6, slides and play features are closed for a calmer pool experience, and pool toys are available.
Hit the lanes at Shakopee Bowl for family-friendly open bowling. There’s special toddler pricing for children ages 3 and under, and automatic scoring and bumpers make bowling fun and accessible for all ages.
Catch the latest releases and favorite films at Marcus Southbridge Crossing Cinema. During the Winter Kids Dream Family Film Series from January 5-March 3, 2024, tickets are only $3 for re-released movies including Clifford the Big Red Dog, Charlotte’s Web, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and more, plus there’s special concession pricing. There’s also a Value Tuesday program for new releases, with discounted movie tickets and concessions.
